The gate sits two hundred yards down a gravel drive. The house Wi-Fi dies halfway there. A camera and video intercom at the pedestal still need a path home, or the app shows offline every time weather or distance wins. Gate camera network planning is part of the gate job and part of the house network job. Treating them as separate projects is how entries end up with a consumer extender taped in a tree.
What the entry actually needs
Most pedestal cameras and intercoms want power and a stable link. PoE over outdoor-rated cable is the clean answer when trench or conduit is possible. A point-to-point wireless bridge from the house or barn to the entry works when digging is off the table, as long as you have clear line of sight and outdoor-rated radios. Hoping the kitchen mesh node will stretch to the keypad usually fails after the first wet leaves and a firmware update.
LiftMaster, Ghost Controls, and HySecurity electronics still need local power and correct operator wiring. Cloud opens and CAPXS-style talk-before-open only help when the network path to the controller or intercom stays up. Design the path with the gate
Plan conduit, pull boxes, and surge protection when the operator goes in, even if the camera arrives later. Keep outdoor junctions sealed. Avoid daisy-chaining cheap Wi-Fi cameras across the lawn. On farms, a mid-drive barn can host a switch and AP that serve both yard cameras and the gate hop. Document which VLAN or SSID the entry gear uses so a future guest-network change does not knock the intercom offline.
Test the path on a rainy night and at noon sun glare. A bridge that works once in perfect weather is not a finished design. Outdoor weatherproof networking covers enclosures and rain once the path exists.
