Indoor routers hate porches. Yard cameras and gate pedestals hate cheap junctions that fill with condensation. Outdoor weatherproof networking is the unglamorous layer that keeps PoE cameras, gate intercoms, and yard access points online when North Georgia swings from humid afternoons to cold snaps.
Cable and power that survive outside
Use outdoor-rated or direct-burial ethernet where runs leave the building. Seal entry points with drip loops. Prefer PoE from a protected indoor switch when you can, so power supplies are not cooking in a plastic box on a post. Where a mid-span injector or switch must sit outdoors, put it in a ventilated, gasketed enclosure off standing water, not in an open birdhouse mount. Surge protection at building entry and at the pedestal earns its keep on long driveway runs.
Mount for rain, sun, and mowers
Aim cameras and APs away from floodlights that blind the sensor at night. Keep yard APs under eaves or in rated housings. Protect pedestal Ethernet from curb strikes and weed-eater cuts the same way you protect gate loops. After install, check seals seasonally; UV and red-clay dust defeat lazy gaskets. One plan for house, yard, and gate
A yard AP that covers the patio is useful. A separate fragile hop to the gate is how overnight recordings go missing. Design outdoor coverage with the same backbone rules as indoors: wire what you can, bridge only with line-of-sight gear meant for outdoors, and document which switch port feeds the entry.
